BUILDING YOUR GREEN VOCABULARY
·
Organic – most often found on foods meaning grown
without pesticides, fertilizers or genetic modification; can be applied to
manufactured materials such as organic cotton hand towels; look for a
certification seal on the packaging
·
Recycled – waste materials that have been processed
so that they can be reused; preferably these materials are post-consumer
waste (PCW) meaning they have been entirely through the chain of consumerism
once already; aim for 30% PCW
·
Natural – this term is not regulated by the USDA,
FDA, or other government agency so a standardized definition cannot be
applied, treat it as a marketing ploy
·
Biodegradable – the product will break down through
natural decaying processes (like microorganisms); almost everything
biodegrades eventually --except Styrofoam; look for 100%
biodegradable in 90 days or similar phrases.
